NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Physics Chapter 8 – Let’s get down to the ground—or should I say, the gravitational pull of the Earth? Chapter 8 on gravitation is where we dive into why things fall to the ground, why we stay stuck on Earth, and how gravity plays a role in the cosmos.
Universal Law of Gravitation: Everything Attracts Everything
Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation is simple, yet it’s a cornerstone of physics. It states that every mass attracts every other mass with a force that’s directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. The formula is:
F=Gm1m2r2F = G \frac{m_1 m_2}{r^2}
Where:
- FF = Gravitational force
- GG = Gravitational constant
- m1,m2m_1, m_2 = Masses of the two objects
- rr = Distance between the centers of the masses
So, no matter how small or big, objects are pulling on each other. This is why you stay firmly on Earth (unless you’re preparing for a space mission, in which case, you’ll still have gravity to contend with).
Acceleration Due to Gravity: What’s the G Factor?
On Earth, gravity accelerates objects at a constant rate, which we call the acceleration due to gravity (denoted as gg). It’s about 9.8 m/s², meaning an object will fall faster and faster as it gets closer to the Earth. The formula for the force acting on an object due to gravity is F=mgF = mg, where:
- FF = Force
- mm = Mass of the object
- gg = Acceleration due to gravity
The beauty of gravity is that it’s universal and consistent, at least here on Earth. But what about celestial bodies? That’s where gravitational fields and orbits come into play.
