Solids—those hard, unyielding objects that don’t just bend and break easily (unless you’re dealing with a super hero movie). In NCERT Solutions for Class 11 Physics Chapter 9, mechanical properties of solids cover how these solids respond to forces, whether they’re squished, pulled, or twisted.
Stress and Strain: The Solid Struggle
When you apply a force to a solid, you get stress. Stress is the force applied per unit area, and it’s measured in pascals (Pa). But when you stress an object too much, it starts to deform—this is where strain comes in. Strain is the deformation produced in the solid due to stress, and it’s a dimensionless quantity.
The relationship between stress and strain is beautifully linear in many materials, especially elastic materials, and the proportionality constant is known as Young’s modulus. The formula is:
E=StressStrainE = \frac{\text{Stress}}{\text{Strain}}
Where:
- EE = Young’s modulus (a measure of material’s stiffness)
- Stress = Force per unit area
- Strain = Deformation per unit length
Elasticity: The Power of Return
Elasticity is the property of materials that allows them to return to their original shape after deforming (think of a rubber band). Hooke’s Law explains elasticity through the formula F=kxF = kx, where:
- FF = Force applied
- kk = Spring constant (stiffness)
- xx = Extension or compression in length
If you stretch a rubber band and let it go, it returns to its original shape because it’s elastic. But if you stretch it too much? Well, then you might end up with a broken rubber band—elasticity has its limits!
